Lot description:
Roman Provincial

SYRIA, Uncertain. Marcus Aurelius. As Caesar, AD 139-161. Æ (21mm, 10.07 g, 6h). Bare-headed and draped bust right / Antoninus Pius on horseback left, extending arm. BMC -; SNG Copenhagen -. Fine, dark green patina.

Similar to the pieces offered in our electronic sales 163, lot 186 and 175, lot 179, with a slight variation on the legends. There is no indication of a city name on this coin, just the names and titles of Aurelius and his adoptive father Antoninus Pius. Certain issues in their names have been attributed to Cyprus, which is a possibility with this coin. The hard reddish earthen encrustation is typical of the Syrian region, so a mint site on the mainland is also a high probability.

Estimate: $100
